To use Ontos, first install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or the Java Developers Kit (JDK). Currently, only version 1.1 is supported. When OROMatcher supports JDK 1.2, then Ontos will also support 1.2. We are currently using OROMatcher-1.1b3, which does not appear to run under JRE/JDK 1.2. After installing the JRE or JDK, unzip Ontos into its own directory (we use C:\Java\Ontos on our development machine). To run Ontos, you need the ontology parser (ONTOLOGY.EXE) and the inferencing program (INFER.EXE). You also need the Ontos JAR file (ONTOS.JAR) and the OROMatcher JAR file (ORO.JAR). You also need to set up data files to run the data extraction. You will find the sample data we used for our ER'98 paper in the files whose names begin with "er98". To run this sample test, execute the RUNIT batch file. If your JRE is installed in a different directory than ours, edit the RUNIT.BAT file to reflect the actual location of your installed JRE. Ontos uses Sun's Java language (http://java.sun.com), and ORO's OROMatcher package (www.oroinc.com) for Perl5 regular expression handling. We thank Sun and ORO for providing the tools needed to make Ontos work. Ontos Software, Copyright (c) 1998, Brigham Young University
